Like many people, one of the things I miss most about pre-pandemic life is travelling. As a surfer, I would take surf trips often because it’s a great way to spend time with friends and take a break from sitting in front of a computer as a direct-response marketer.
Luckily, surfing is a pretty individualistic sport that can easily accommodate social distancing regulations. Though we don’t know exactly when it will be safe again to hop on an airplane to go surfing somewhere across the globe, I’ve managed to have a few socially-distanced sessions over the past few months.
I have some tips on how to stay safe on a surf trip when the time comes. Let’s get into it:
Research your local surf spots:
The beauty about surfing is that if you live near a coast, you don’t have to go far to have a great session. If you’re planning on going surfing soon, do some research to find the closest location to you to cut down on extensive travelling. I also advise looking for more remote spots in your area to avoid big crowds.
Be your own ride:
If you still plan to meet up with buddies for a great surf session, it might be smart to take your own car. Don’t get me wrong- there is nothing like packing in the car and listening to some great tunes on the way to the beach – but if you want to be as safe as possible, being your own ride is the way to go.
Go on an off day:
To avoid crowds, try heading out to the beach during the week rather than on a Saturday or Sunday. Since almost everyone is working from home these days, rearrange your schedule so you can get a quick surf session in. This will also help you destress from the work day.
Plan for the future:
While we can’t all be jet setting to our dream surf locations right now, start planning for the future! Do some research on spots you want to hit up when travelling is safe again, and make it a goal to get there. This will keep you motivated to work hard and keep spirits high in these crazy times.
